Desert Island sites
July 19th, 2007 posted by jessica
It’s raining yet again in Vancouver and thoughts turn very quickly to sunnier climes, even virtual ones. As my friends and I were thinking about tropical getaways it didn’t take long before we got onto that hoary old pastime of making lists of desert island picks. In this round, it was the top ten sites we’d want/need if we were stranded on a desert island with our laptops and wi-fi, of course, and a host of other invisible infrastructural supports for the good life. Here is one attempt at making that list. What might be yours? It turns out most of ours represent services that are available from many different sites, with varying numbers and types of features. Maybe not the most exciting, but they certainly seem indispensable to our daily lives.
10. bmo.com - or any other banking/money site, even prosper.com.
9. spud.ca - an organic grocery service, saves a ton of time, and, hey, who doesn’t need grocery delivery on a desert island?
8. hotmail.com - or gmail or yahoo or whatever
7. digitalspy.co.uk - everyone needs their industry news site. What’s your favorite?
6. cbc.ca - ah, the ceeb. Brings us news from our own little regions and the big wide world. Plus, cool archives!
5. gutenburg.org - access to over 100,000 books, no need to make a desert island reading list.
4. Philosopher’s Island - kids aged 7-11 discuss philosophical questions by imagining they’re on a desert island. Wow.
3. ovguide.com - there has to be an entertainment portal of sorts. This one organizes all the big ones. Then we can make it without a tv.
2. craigslist.com - could probably make a living, find a date, and furnish our beach shack with free stuff.
1. google.ca - doesn’t require justification although google maps could be incredibly helpful in our, uh, delicate situation.
